Concept and Design

The original idea was to create a limousine with an imposing style that offered its four occupants a new driving sensation.

The final design, however, is an uncompromising car that combines dynamic performance, comfort, luxury and environmental protection.

The 908 RC is targeted at a very upmarket virtual customer, naturally accustomed to a very high level of luxury but above all passionate about their motoring and its history, but also in search of innovation coupled with assertive styling and uncompromised driving pleasure.

Peugeot 908 RC Concept

"The raison d'être of any concept car is to explore new ideas and to test those ideas in an attempt to create the ultimate solution. Know-how and passion, combined with imagination then become the motive force that turns dreams into reality. The Peugeot 908 RC evokes passion and imagination to allow us to dream but it will also have a serious side."

The vehicle is built around a pre-impregnated carbon composite and vacuum-polymerised aluminium honeycomb structure.

The rear section is a self-supporting shell incorporating a sub-frame consisting of a tubular structure on which the engine and suspension are assembled.

The originality of the 908 RC resides in its compact design, with the engine arranged in a rear central transverse position.

Similarly the compact 6-speed electronically controlled sequential gearbox has been specially adapted to withstand the phenomenal torque, and is located under the engine.

The position of the power train allows the creation of a large-capacity boot, situated behind the final drive assembly and therefore not encroaching on the generous interior space of the passenger compartment.

This design also allows the driving position to be moved forward, maximising the driving experience for both the driver and the passengers.

Mercedes Benz bionic car automotive design meets modern art

Mercedes-Benz bionic car

Mercedes-Benz bionic car

February 25, 2008 One of the stand-out automotive design concepts from back in 2005 has re-emerged in the guise of modern art. With a highly-aerodynamic design based on what at first seems an unlikely candidate - the tropical sea-dwelling boxfish - the Mercedes-Benz bionic concept car is appearing as part of the "Design and the Elastic Mind" exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

First unveiled in June 2005, the Mercedes-Benz bionic car is the result of a collaboration of engineers, designers and biologists working from the template of the unusual looking, but very aerodynamic Ostracion Cubicus – more commonly known as the boxfish. Apart from its aerodynamic attributes, the Boxfish can also withstand high pressures and survive unscathed following collisions with corals or other sea dwellers due to an outer skin consisting of hexagonal bone plates.

The resulting two-door, four-seater concept has a drag coefficient (cd figure) of 0.19 and delivers fuel consumption of 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers. If the US measuring system (FTP 75) is used, the figure comes in at around 70 miles per gallon (mpg, combined) – 30 percent better than a standard-production car. When driving at a constant speed of 90 km/h, the direct-injection model consumes a mere 2.8 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers – equivalent to 84 miles per gallon in the US test cycle.

The pioneering concept vehicle was also the first test car to be fitted with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology - the emission-control technology which Mercedes‑Benz calls BLUETEC that has been available for commercial vehicles since 2005 and in the E-Class 320 BLUETEC since October 2006.

The hexagonal bone plates found in the Boxfish also influenced the strong, lightweight design. In the case of a car door, for example, this honeycomb-design method increases stiffness by up to 40 percent, while the weight is reduced by around 30 percent, based on calculations using the bionic SKO (Soft Kill Option) method. The SKO method developed as part of the original project has since been used for producing components such as the engine support arms that are fitted on some rural-service buses.

Open to the public from February 24 until May 12, 2008, the "Design and the Elastic Mind" exhibition at New York's MoMA showcases trailblazing innovations in the fields of design and science.

Marek Reichman, The creative director for Aston Martin said that it was only perfect sense that Aston Martin and Colette collaborated on a car since they managed to blend modernity and innovation with the Cygnet car. It only made sense that the two companies made this piece of automotive fashion for city living.

More than the functionality of the car, Aston Martin and Colette both focused more on the external design of the car and therefore took initiative towards the colors, materials and styling of the car.

2012 Ford Focus First Riding

2012 Ford Focus First Riding
And should not be surprised by the notion of a compact car with Grand Touring features and amazing fuel economy. The new creations like the Hyundai Elantra and the Chevrolet Cruze made in the compact car segment of the most hotly contested in the market, putting pressure on the strings of combatants as long as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla in the process. But while the Cruze and Elantra proved that great content can come in small packages with lower price tags, there is a growing sense of fun to launch small car may be at risk for travelers who have inherited genes smooth-riding of his brothers.

In a sense it was almost inevitable evolution. Whereas the compact segment once served a cornucopia of attractions that were out of power, but much to market manipulation has shown that more than anything else, the buyers of this land want to be. In an attempt to draw any copper cent, Hyundai and Chevrolet shelved the independent rear suspension in their respective cases for the design much cheaper torsion beam.
